La strada per le montagne si sviluppa nella tensione verso un luogo che è allo stesso tempo reale ed immaginario: la casa in cui nacque mio nonno, nei Carpazi ucraini, ritratta in una fotografia del 1919. Attraverso le implicazioni di una vicenda individuale, il film, si pone come un interrogativo aperto sul presente di quei luoghi e sull’eredità storica di questo territorio remoto, di confine, teatro di efferate vicende durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Noir ibrido, basato sulla coesistenza di materiale documentario e di finzione, di fotografie, di reperti e di una voce off, filo rosso di un racconto in prima persona e al contempo collettivo. Quasi un’indagine antropologica che procede nel raffronto velato, ma costante, tra il presente, il passato e un tempo parallelo legato alle leggende locali.

The way to the mountains develops in the tension towards a place that is both real and imaginary: the house where my grandfather was born, in the Ukrainian Carpathians, portrayed in a photograph from 1919. Through the implications of an individual story, the film poses an open question about the present of those places and the historical legacy of this remote, border territory, the scene of brutal events during the Second World War. A hybrid noir, based on the coexistence of documentary and fictional material, photographs, artefacts and a voice over, that acts as the common thread of a collective narrative. Almost an anthropological investigation that proceeds in the veiled but constant comparison between the present, the past and a parallel time linked to local legends.
